Reader's Cafe 2013

Our second grade class just hosted a Reader's Cafe. I got the idea from Ms. Winston in Texas. This is what we did:
  • Went book shopping for books by five of our favorite authors (Chris Van Allsburg, Mercer Mayer, James Marshall, Dr. Seuss, and Cynthia Rylant)
  • Read them everyday for 3 weeks.
  • Wrote an essay about our upcoming event.
  • Made place-mats with a paragraph about our author.
  • Invited 3 classes and our parents.
  • Decorated our room and woo-lah! (onomatopoeia)

Miguel's Dad and sisters stayed to read with kids who didn't have a parent who could come. Thanks so much!

Patience's Dad is a single father who is so supportive and sweet.

This is our cute principal, Mrs. Wilcox.

I added this trifold this year because we were writing it for Treasures.

This is last years placemat. I think I like it better.

This is a picture of the place-mat
This is their paragraph about an upcoming event.

On the day of the Reader's Cafe we put gingham tablecloths, flowers in mason jars, salt and pepper shakers, menus, battery operated candles (This was a very fancy Reader's Cafe), and tip jars for coyote cash on each table. We had to borrow some chairs. Every child had donated a bag of little candy bars, so we had a treats table. The kids dressed up like waiters and waitresses. We practiced looking our friend in the eye and saying, "Welcome to our Reader's Cafe. Would you like a treat?" Then they were supposed to take their friend to the treat table and then to their seat. They then read them their place-mat paragraph and the book. Our goal was to read as smooth as hot honey (Simile) and boy did they!
For free copies of the place mat template, menu, prewrite, invitations go to my teachers pay teachers site. I hope you have as much fun as we did!
